Why would Holden go say goodbye to Mr. Spencer? When he gets to Mr. Spencer’s, he criticizes Holden for all of his failures at Pencey. It seems to me that Mr. Spencer see’s something in Holden. I get this feeling because Mr. Spencer lectures him. He says “Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules” () I think Mr. Spencer really tries to emphasize that he needs to play by the rules in life. He also tries to get him to think about his future. Its obvious that Holden doesn’t know where he is going because he gets defensive and leaves.
